Though Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has an undisputed fight in May, it is well known that the plan is to face off with Terence Crawford in a Las Vegas mega-fight this September.
Canelo dropped the IBF Super Middleweight World Title last year when he refused to face mandatory challenger William Scull, who picked up the vacant belt and has now found himself in the opposite corner for the Mexican’s first fight as part of a deal with Riyadh Season.
Should Canelo beat Scull to reclaim the belt and become two-time undisputed at 168 pounds, he will welcome fellow four-weight world champion Crawford up to the division later in the year.
Though Alvarez had previously dismissed the fight as ‘easy money’ due to the gulf in weight, he more recently praised Crawford speaking to ESPN.
“He’s a complete fighter.”
Switch-hitting ‘Bud’ from Omaha certainly has a tall task having last competed at super-welterweight and intending on packing on 14 pounds for the legacy-defining fight. Should he do it, he will become a five-weight champion like Floyd Mayweather Jr – one of only two men to beat Canelo in 66 fights.
Canelo, 34, also recently said the he believes the Crawford match-up will be a bigger event with more pay-per-view buys than his 2013 defeat to ‘Money’ Mayweather.
Undefeated Crawford, 37, has fought his way up the pound-for-pound rankings and is considered by many to be the most talented fighter on the planet, however some in the sport have warned him that granite-chinned Canelo presents a different challenge entirely.
