Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are at the top of the tree in the lightweight ranks. Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez is clear on who he thinks takes number one spot.

WBA Champion ‘Tank’ Davis is one of the best active fighters on the planet, though he isn’t as active as many would like. His last outing was an impressive defence of his belt when he knocked out Frank Martin, before that he last fought all the way back in April 2023, stopping Ryan Garcia with a body shot.

He has long been linked to a fight with Shakur Stevenson but as of yet no deal has been reached. Stevenson, the WBC Lightweight World Champion and defensive master, is recovering from surgery on a hand injury that forced him to pull out of his world title defence against Joe Cordina on the undercard of the undisputed light-heavyweight fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol on October 12.

Speaking to PPV.com, super-middleweight ruler Canelo was asked to draft his own boxing team and didn’t hesitate at 135 pounds, immediately picking Gervonta Davis.

He has in the past backed him to beat Stevenson should they meet.

“Shakur Stevenson is a good fighter, he moves a lot and it’s very difficult to hit him but I like Gervonta Davis, he’s a really good fighter. He hits hard and he knows how to go forward. I put my money on Gervonta.”

Knockout artist Davis was recently close to securing a fight with Vasily Lomachenko before the Ukrainian decided to take the rest of the year off. A rematch with Isaac Cruz – one of two men to take ‘Tank’ the distance – also fell apart after the Mexican became lost his super-lightweight belt to Jose Valenzuela.Instead, he is now slated to face WBA super featherweight titlist Lamont Roach in Washington this coming December.

Stevenson says he will return in February of next year, pending recovery, to take on number one contender William Zepeda. Should both champions come through, fans will once again demand a unification.
