Canelo Alvarez is viewed as one of the best of this current generation.

The Mexican superstar has operated at the highest level in boxing for over a decade, having become a four-weight world champion from super-welterweight up to light heavyweight.

During that time, he has defeated huge names like Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley, and also became undisputed at 168lbs after victories against Caleb Plant, Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith.

Alvarez is now set to have a showdown with fellow pound-for-pound star Terence Crawford in September, after a turbulent week of negotiations that at one stage seemed to suggest Canelo would miss out on the Crawford bout in order to face Jake Paul.

The fight between Canelo and Crawford could go a long way into shaping each man’s legacy in the sport, but when it comes to the greatest of all time, there is a clear answer for Alvarez.

During a feature with GQ, Canelo was asked to give his opinion on the legendary Muhammad Ali, and the Mexican icon made his view very clear.

“The best in the world – of all time.”

Ali transcended the sport, becoming a global phenomenon due to his memorable fights against fighters such as George Foreman, Joe Frazier and Sonny Liston.

He became a three-time world heavyweight champion before hanging up his gloves in 1981 with a final record of 56 victories and just 5 defeats.

While to many he will always be seen as the greatest of all time, Ali himself once named the one heavyweight rival who was better than he ever thought.
