Canelo Alvarez Names His Best Ever Win: “That Fight Changed Me”

Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez is 65 fights deep into a four-division world title winning campaign.

Having already secured his place in the history books and likely the Hall of Fame, Alvarez has been the biggest star in the sport for years now. Fans could point to a number of points in his career where that became the case, but there was a clear stage for him when he became ‘better and more confident.’

Speaking on The Full Send podcast, Canelo identified a Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry bout with Miguel Cotto as the best moment so far.

“I think I have a lot of good of moments, but one of my best moments is when I beat Miguel Ángel Cotto – a legend in boxing. I think that changed my career. After that I felt more confident, a better fighter, it’s one of my best moments.”

Canelo beat Cotto over the distance in 2015 winning the WBC Middleweight World title. He would soon go on to target all the belts at super-middleweight and currently still holds them.

Another notable night under the lights was a loss against Floyd Mayweather, which came two years prior to the Cotto win. The Mexican says he learned a lot from defeat to the greatest of a generation.

“I trained so hard and obviously I tried to beat him. If you beat him you’re gonna be the best in the world at 23. Imagine that. You know, he was the better man that night. A lot of experience. He’s a great fighter. I learned a lot and that’s when I realised this isn’t gonna stop me, I’m gonna be the best one day. No matter what. That fight helped me a lot.”

Canelo is set to return this September. Up until recently, the frontrunner was another Puerto Rican in Edgar Berlanga but Chris Eubank Jr has recently emerged with the highest potential.
