Canelo Didn’t Hesitate When Asked Which Defeat Hurt Most Between Floyd Mayweather And Dmitry Bivol

Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez has suffered two defeats during his illustrious boxing career.

The first of those came way back in September 2013, when Canelo went up against boxing great Floyd Mayweather.

The Mexican superstar was the reigning WBC super-welterweight champion for the bout and had an undefeated record of 42-0-1, but that couldn’t prevent him from suffering a defeat on points and the first loss of his professional career.

It was nearly a decade until Alvarez’s next loss, when after becoming champion at 160lbs, 168lbs and 175lbs, he attempted to add another belt to his collection when he challenged WBA light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol in May 2022.

Canelo was a big favourite heading into the bout, but Bivol upset the odds to win by unanimous decision and add another blemish to Alvarez’s record.

That impressive record currently stands at 62 wins, 2 losses and 2 draws, and Canelo has revealed to Cigar Talk which defeat between Mayweather and Bivol hurt him the most.

“The Bivol fight bothers me more because I think I’m not 100% in that fight. I should stop it and take more time. At the end of the day everything happens for a reason. I learned a lesson that way and that’s it.”

Since the loss to Bivol, Canelo has won five fights in a row, with the latest coming in September when he defeated Edgar Berlanga by unanimous decision to retain his unified super-middleweight titles.

Alvarez is expected to return to the ring in May, but one of his main rivals claims that he has now ‘moved on’ from wanting the fight.
