Canelo Alvarez suffered his first professional defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather.
Canelo was the undefeated WBC super-welterweight champion heading into the fight, having defeated fighters like Shane Mosley and Austin Trout up to that point.
It was a whole different proposition against Mayweather though, who was a five-weight world champion and the reigning WBA champion at 154lbs for the clash in Las Vegas back in September 2013.
While it would be hard pressed to find anybody that felt Canelo should have got the win against Mayweather, there is one fight that the Mexican superstar does believe his former rival lost.t
In a resurfaced YouTube clip, Canelo discussed Mayweather’s past fight with Oscar De La Hoya, giving his take on how the fight unfolded.
“I think Oscar De La Hoya won.”
Mayweather and De La Hoya met way back in May 2007, with Mayweather moving up to 154lbs for the first time in his career to challenge De La Hoya for his WBC super-welterweight title.
It went the 12-round distance, with the judges scoring it 116-112, 115-113 and 113-115, marking the only time in Mayweather’s career that a judge scored a fight in favour of his opponent.
After hanging up the gloves, De La Hoya became a promoter and went on to guide the career of Canelo for a long period, but following a bitter fallout in 2020, the two have now become arch rivals.
