Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has broken his silence on Jaime Munguia – a former opponent turned training partner – failing a doping test

Munguia, who lost on points to Canelo in May of 2024, was informed that a fight week Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency test had showed exogenous testosterone metabolites around the time of his rematch with Bruno Surace.

The 28-year-old former super-welterweight world champion said in no uncertain terms that he has not cheated.

“Throughout my boxing career, I have undergone numerous anti-doping tests and have never tested positive. I was tested twice during this training camp, and both results came back negative, which is why receiving this notification of an adverse finding has been a complete surprise to me.

“Several experts have expalined that there are multiple ways contamination can occur, and I am fully willing to undergo any retroactive, current or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete. I will not make any further comments on this matter until the process is concluded with the results of the B sample.”

Surace – who beat Munguia by knockout in a big upset when they first met in the ring back in December of 2024 – has said that he expects the result of the rematch – a unanimous decision for Munguia – to be ‘overturned immediately.’

Canelo, however, has now commented on the matter, expecting his camp-mate to ‘clear it up soon.’

“We believe in Jaime Munguia, who will surely clear this up soon. And I want to be very clear that Eddy Reynoso doesn’t give him his supplements. Eddy is solely dedicated to training him.”

The pound-for-pound superstar has likely felt the need to include coach Eddy Reynoso’s name due to backlash on social media surrounding a number of fighters he has worked with, past or present, testing positive for banned substances.

Canelo has previously served a six-month suspension for having Clenbuterol in his system, though it was accepted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that he did not knowingly take the substance.

Munguia has ten days from the results being made clear to him to request for his B sample to be tested. Should it return the same results, as most B samples do, he will face an investigation and hearing with a result change, suspension and fine all realistic outcomes.
