The professional boxing career of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr hasn’t necessary gone as planned.
The 39-year-old from Culiacan, Mexico reigned as the WBC world middleweight champion between 2011 and 2012, defeating the likes of Andy Lee and Peter Manfredo Jr during this period.
He was eventually dethroned by Sergio Martinez, and since then has struggled to live up to the expectations that have been set by fans and analysts following the extraordinary career of his father Chavez Sr, who won world titles in three divisions throughout his 115-fight tenure.
Despite this, Chavez Jr has the opportunity to somewhat redeem himself as he gears up to face the controversial Jake Paul, who turned over as a professional fighter after a successful career as a YouTuber.
They lock horns in a cruiserweight contest on Saturday June 28 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Chavez Jr’s last ring appearance came almost a year ago when he defeated MMA fighter Uriah Hall via unanimous decision.
One man who has had his say on the fight is the man who looked like facing Paul next, Canelo Alvarez. Speaking to Fight Hub TV Canelo believes it is a great opportunity for his countryman after a number of frustrating years both inside and outside of the ring and says he ‘fully trusts’ that he will beat Paul.
“I’m rooting for Chavez, I think it’s a chance for him to redeem himself and it’s a great opportunity, I fully trust that he’ll secure that victory, I wish him all the best. Julio should win, with good preparation and focus he should come out on top.”
Chavez could potentially derail Paul’s chances of securing a world title shot in the near future, which the 28-year-old from Cleveland has spoken about regularly throughout his boxing career.
