Saul Canelo Alvarez may be an interested spectator if Dmitry Bivol and David Benavidez do indeed meet.
Undisputed light-heavyweight champion Bivol and undefeated sensation Benavidez are reportedly in early talks to face one another in a bout between two of the best 175lbs fighters on the planet.
Bivol became undisputed champion with a revenge victory over Artur Beterbiev in their rematch in February, with some fans believing that the trilogy between the two men could be next.
Canelo knows both Bivol and Benavidez well for different reasons, having stepped up to 175lbs to take on Bivol for his WBA light heavyweight title back in May 2022.
It was the Russian who claimed the victory, defeating Alvarez by unanimous decision to become just the second man after Floyd Mayweather to beat the Mexican superstar.
Canelo’s connection with Benavidez comes from the pair being repeatedly linked to a fight for a number of years, but Canelo has never been overly keen, leading to Benavidez stepping up to 175lbs.
The proposed fight between Bivol and Benavidez is seen as a 50-50 to a lot of people, but speaking back in August, Canelo was asked if he feels his former foe would be victorious.
“[If] we see Benavidez [from] the last fight, yes.”
The fight in question was Benavidez taking on Oleksandr Gvozdyk, and while ‘The Mexican Monster’ may have won by unanimous decision, it seems that Alvarez wasn’t too impressed with the performance. He has also stated that Benavidez was impressive at super-middleweight because he was big for the division, and that he will ‘do nothing’ at light-heavy.
