2025 may be the year that British heavyweight rivals Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua finally step through the ropes together. One of the most accomplished fighters in the sport, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez, has weighed in with what he believes happens when the first bell goes.
Fury and Joshua could have, at one stage, faced off for the undisputed heavyweight championship. Failed negotiations, legal battles with other rivals and defeats have put paid to that, but the fight still holds an incredible amount of intrigue on UK shores.
Both men have now lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk and are therefore out of the world title picture. Whilst Fury is coming off a competitive second defeat against the Ukrainian, ‘AJ’ has more to do when it comes to building back following a devastating knockout at the hands of the division’s other current champion, Daniel Dubois.
The losses perhaps make the negotiation even easier this year and, with the backing of Riyadh Season, finances are highly unlikely to be an issue. So, providing no big surprises, 2025 looks to be the year the long-awaited heavyweight battle of Britain takes place.
If that is the case, four-weight world champion Canelo told Mail Sport Boxing that he wants ‘AJ’ to win but, when pushed for a prediction, had to back ‘The Gypsy King.’
“It’s gonna be a good fight … I think Fury has more experience and I think he wins.”
The fight could be a farewell to both men, who have at various stages carried the heavyweight scene on their backs and filled UK stadiums with record-breaking audiences.
Joshua has confirmed his interest and eyes now turn to Fury, who is still licking his wounds from the Usyk rematch – a fight he believed he should have won on the scorecards.
