Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has picked his side in the upcoming undisputed heavyweight rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois.
The pair first met back in 2023, with the Ukrainian winning the bout by stoppage in the ninth to retain his unified titles. He would go on to win the fourth and final belt with a victory over Tyson Fury, though to honor the rematch had to vacate the IBF strap.
Dubois was elevated to champion and scored the best win of his career with a knockout of Anthony Joshua to mark his first defence.
With newfound confidence and undeniable power, some in the sport feel the Brit will be the first to defeat Usyk this time around. Canelo – who has his own huge fight coming up against Terence Crawford – does not agree.
Taking to X, the undisputed super-middleweight champion fully backed Usyk.
“Over the past five years, Usyk has beaten the best. Oleksandr has very strong stamina; he’s very technical and smart. When I see someone with that kind of focus, I back them. That’s why I placed a big bet on his victory. Oleksandr, you do you!”
The Mexican icon, as part of a promotion, placed $500,000 on the Ukrainian to win the fight.
At 38, Usyk has confirmed that he has just one fight left after this one. Depending on the route he chooses, and if he manages to defeat Dubois for the second time, one or more of the belts may be dropped and spread out amongst the top contenders.
The undisputed fight takes place at Wembley Stadium on July 19.
