Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin shared the ring three times in one of the most memorable trilogies of recent times.

After much speculation, their first showdown took place back in September 2017. With three of the four world middleweight titles up for grabs, the fight ended in a split draw after 12 incredibly close rounds.

Their highly anticipated rematch happened exactly one year later, with the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas playing host once again. After another cagey 12-round affair, Canelo was given the nod over ‘GGG’, capturing the WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight titles via majority decision in another controversial conclusion.

The third and final installment came in September 2022, four years after the second meeting. With Golovkin seemingly past his formidable best, Canelo won the contest via unanimous decision to retain his undisputed super middleweight championship. Unlike their first two encounters, the Mexican superstar boxed perfectly to deny ‘GGG’ and put their long-running rivalry to bed.

After sharing 36 rounds with ‘GGG’, Canelo once spoke out and summed up the power of the Kazakh icon, who boasts one of the greatest win to knockout ratios in the history of boxing.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, the 34-year-old rated Golovkin’s power highly, although did admit it was not ‘out of this world’.

“It’s nothing out of this world. Power is probably an 8 or 9 out of 10.”

Golovkin has not fought since his third battle with Canelo almost three years ago. The 42-year-old has never officially announced his retirement from the sport, although it appears that the former pound-for-pound superstar has laced his gloves up for the final time, with no concrete plans to return to the ring in the near future.
