Canelo Alvarez has made it clear where he will be fighting Terence Crawford later this year.
Two of the pound-for-pound best fighters in the world will meet when Canelo and Crawford do battle in September, with ‘Bud’ stepping up two weight divisions to challenge the Mexican superstar for his undisputed super-middleweight titles.
It is seen as a big ask for Crawford, who has spent the majority of his career competing at 147lbs, and has only fought above that once when he defeated Israil Madrimov to win the WBA super-welterweight title last August.
As for Canelo, he has fought as high as 175lbs in his career, and has never tasted defeat at super-middleweight, having beaten fighters such as Gennady Golovkin, Caleb Plant, Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders in that weight class.
His most recent win came in May when he defeated IBF champion William Scull, adding that belt to his collection and becoming a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs in the process.
The fight against Crawford has been discussed for the past 12 months, but was officially confirmed after Canelo’s win over Scull, originally scheduled to be held at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Friday 12 September.
Those plans changed though after it was announced that the fight would be pushed back 24 hours to the Saturday, and that the location was also now up for consideration, with New York and Los Angeles also now in the running.
Canelo appears to have ended that speculation though, after he revealed in an interview that the fight will indeed be in Las Vegas.
Some of boxing’s biggest names have already weighed in on how they believe the fight will play out, with legendary promoter Bob Arum the latest to offer his verdict.
