The boxing world is eagerly awaiting to see who Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez will pick as his next opponent, with many hoping it will be David Benavidez.
This potential fight between the current unified super-middleweight star and former two-time champion Benavidez has been one of the most anticipated match-ups in the sport for some time
Both fighters are considered elite at 168 pounds, and a showdown between them would be huge given their styles, records, and status in the sport.
After chasing the clash for a while, Benavidez moved up to the light-heavyweight division last time out and beat Oleksandr Gvozdyk on points to earn a potential shot at the winner of the undisputed battle between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol.
Bivol is one of only two men to have beaten Canelo of course, winning a comfortable points decision back in 2022 to successfully defend his WBA belt in the Mexican’s own move up to the 175 pounds ranks.
Canelo has made it clear that he wants the rematch with Bivol, providing the Russian can come through against Beterbiev next month, but as of yet has shown no desire to face Beterbiev should he get his hand raised.
When speaking to KO Artists Sports, he was asked who would present the bigger challenge between Benavidez and Beterbiev and Canelo was in no doubt with his answer.
“Oh Beterbiev, yeah of course, He’s a champion. He has something to offer me. He’s strong, he’s in another weight.”
Beterbiev vs Bivol will take place on October 12 in Saudi Arabia as part the opening of Riyadh Season.
