Canelo Says World Champion Rival Has Accomplished Nothing: “He Thinks He’s Superman”

Canelo Alvarez has criticised the credentials of an unbeaten world champion.

The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico is almost 70 fights into an accomplished professional career, which began when he was just 15-years-old back in 2005.

He reclaimed the undisputed super-middleweight championship with a points victory over former IBF champion William Scull on May 3, becoming the first fighter in boxing history to achieve the feat on two separate occasions.

As he prepares for what is sure to be a legacy defining year, Canelo has fired back at a reigning world champion who has been on his radar for a number of years.

Speaking to FightHype, Canelo responded to the persistence of David Benavidez, who has targeted a showdown with Canelo on multiple occasions in recent years.

“I think the way he talks, he thinks he’s Superman, and he’s very disrespectful, not just with me with everybody, and he’s accomplished nothing.

“He’s not even a champion, he’s not even in my weight class already and you know there’s a lot of things that doesn’t make sense, plus this point in my career I can do whatever I want.”

Benavidez had been the mandatory challenger to Canelo’s WBC super-middleweight title before he made the decision to move up to 175lbs after a fight with the Mexican star failed to come to fruition.

After this interview was released, Benavidez was recently elevated to the new WBC light-heavyweight champion after former champion and the second man to beat Canelo, Dmitry Bivol, opted to vacate the crown to pursue a trilogy showdown with former undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev.

Though many fans want to see Canelo face Benavidez, it looks as unlikely as ever to take place.
