Canelo Is Now Willing To Fight Conor McGregor Under One Condition: “Why Not”

Canelo Alvarez is one of the biggest stars in boxing and Conor McGregor is a huge personality in his own right.

As such, the pair have long been linked for a potential fight with one another. Canelo is the much more active fighter and current unified super middleweight champion who last time out beat Edgar Berlanga via unanimous decision back in September to defend his titles.

McGregor has had just one professional boxing match and that was a one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather in August 2017. He is a former UFC Featherweight and Lightweight Champion but hasn’t fought since July 2021 when he lost for a second time to Dustin Poirier having also been stopped by him in January of the same year.

Speaking to IFL TV, it was put to Canelo that he had agreed to fight McGregor.

“No, I didn’t say that. They asked me if I was able to fight McGregor at some point and I said you never say no.”

He was then asked directly if he would fight the Irishman and stayed on the fence.

“I can’t say no. Maybe, I don’t know.”

It was put to him that a fight with McGregor might damage his legacy, which he conceded was true.

“It’s not something I want for my legacy. But if it’s for a lot of money, why not.”

Right now Canelo has not yet announced who he will be fighting on his traditional Cinco de Mayo fight date next year.

He has long been linked with fights with the likes of undisputed welterweight champion turned 154 lbs belt holder Terence Crawford, and has spoken before of his desire to rematch Dmitry Bivol who beat him up at light heavyweight back in 2022.
