Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez is one of the greatest fighters of the past decade.
The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico has been a dominant force within the super-middleweight division since he stepped up from 160lbs back in 2018, remaining unbeaten in every bout he has had at the 168lb limit.
Canelo made history to become the division’s first undisputed champion of the ‘four belt era’ when he stopped Caleb Plant in the penultimate round of their showdown in November 2021,
He has also enjoyed impressive wins over the likes of Gennadiy Golovkin, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia, but the Mexican icon is targeting one man outside of his usual division.
Canelo will return to the ring in May when he has a chance to once again capture all the belts at 168 when he takes on IBF champion William Scull. If victorious he is then expected to go straight into a blockbuster contest against four-weight world champion Terence Crawford.
Those two fights will see out his 2025 in the ring, but when speaking to The Ring Magazine Canelo expressed his desire for a rematch against Russian great Dmitry Bivol next year, who became just the second fighter to defeat him when they clashed back in 2022 at 175lbs.
“I hope I have the opportunity to have the rematch with Bivol, that’s the only fight at 175 I would really take but we’ll see. I want to tell myself ‘Hey, you learned something from that fight’, what things you don’t need to do again. I have that thing in myself which says ‘Hey, you need to show that you’re a better fighter than him’.”
Bivol successfully defended his WBA light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision victory when they fought, becoming the second fighter after Floyd Mayweather Jr to add a blemish to the Mexican star’s record.
The 34-year-old from Russia recently became the undisputed champion when he defeated Artur Beterbiev in their rematch on February 22, with a trilogy between the pair looking likely to happen before 2025 comes to an end.
