Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has revealed that he ‘would love’ to face one retired world champion, even though he doubts the bout will ever happen.
Canelo has already guaranteed his place in the Hall of Fame, having become a four-weight world champion and one of the biggest draws in the sport.
The Mexican great is the current unified super-middleweight champion having also won world titles at super welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight.
During his 66 fight career he has only tasted defeat twice. His last loss was when he stepped up for the second time to 175lbs but was outpointed by Dmitry Bivol. Before that he lost to all-time great Floyd Mayweather Jr back in 2013.
Canelo has now admitted to DAZN Boxing that he would love to face Mayweather once again in hope of ‘getting rid of the little thorn’ of his first career defeat.
“Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it’s not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn.”
Although the fight was billed as a potential passing of the torch, Mayweather put on a boxing masterclass to take victory on the scorecards, later revealing to Fighthype that it was an ‘easy’ night’s work.
“You can take a guy like Canelo. I’ll tell the truth about Canelo. The mo**erf**ker was easy. A cakewalk, easy. You’re all praising this dude. He was nothing. I was almost 40 and I cooked this dude, easy.”
Mayweather hasn’t fought in a professional ring since 2017 when he defeated MMA star Conor McGregor on his boxing debut.
As for Canelo, he is next out against William Scull on May 3 when he looks to regain his undisputed status at 168.
