Canelo Alvarez finds himself in an unusual position following his defeat to Terence Crawford.
Canelo was dethroned as undisputed super-middleweight champion after coming up short against Crawford at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas last Saturday.
Crawford claimed the unanimous decision victory after the judges scored it 116-112, 115-113, 115-113 in his favour, picking up the win as the underdog after stepping up two weight divisions to 168lbs.
The loss for Canelo has marked the first time in seven years that he hasn’t been a reigning world champion, dating back to September 2018 prior to his second meeting with Gennady Golovkin.
Since then, the Mexican superstar has gone on to compete in 16 straight world title fights, winning multiple championships from middleweight up to light heavyweight, going alongside his reign as light-middleweight world champion earlier in his career.
Canelo has confirmed he will continue boxing, and his new world ranking has been revealed as he bids to get straight back into world title contention, with the WBC placing him at number one in their rankings at 168lbs.
Despite the number one ranking, Canelo isn’t the mandatory challenger for Crawford, due to Christian Mbilli currently holding the WBC interim strap. He drew against Lester Martinez last weekend, and the pair have been ordered to have a rematch.
Canelo’s placement at number one has seen Hamzah Sheeraz pushed down into the number two position, and while the Brit’s ranking may have changed, it was recently stated that Sheeraz would be more than willing to take on the Mexican superstar next.
