Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez would jump at the chance to step through the ropes with a retired pound-for-pound superstar before he himself hangs up the gloves.

The 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico has written his name into boxing folklore over the last decade, winning world titles in four weight divisions as well as becoming the first undisputed super middleweight champion of the ‘four belt era’.

Canelo has put himself up against a number of top fighters throughout his tenure, defeating the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto and Jermell Charlo to name a few. His most recent outing came against Edgar Berlanga Jr last September, comprehensively outpointing the highly-rated contender to retain his unified titles at 168lbs.

He is now preparing to face IBF super middleweight champion William Scull on May 3 to become a two-time undisputed king at 168lbs. Following that, a mega-fight with Terence Crawford awaits.

Alvarez has mad no secret about the fact that he has already secured his legacy and struggles to find opponents to add to it, however. speaking to DAZN Boxing, he expressed his interest in a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr, who became the first man to beat the Mexican icon back in 2013.

“Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it’s not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn.”

‘Money’ Mayweather – who beat Canelo by majority decision – announced his retirement from the sport back in 2017, just a short while after he defeated MMA legend Conor McGregor in what was the 50th and final professional fight of his glittering tenure.

The 48-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan has had a number of exhibition bouts since exiting the professional ranks, facing the likes of Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa and another MMA star in Aaron Chalmers. He is highly unlikely to make a professional return.

Canelo’s only other loss is to Dmitry Bivol, and he may have a good chance at securing that rematch before the pair hang up the gloves.
