Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez would love a showdown with a retired boxing legend but doubts it will ever happen.

The 34-year-old from Guadalajara is just shy of 70 fights into what has been an exceptional professional career, where he has won world titles in four weight divisions thus far.

He became the first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the ‘four belt era’ when he defeated Caleb Plant back in 2021, and he was able to repeat this feat earlier this month when he defeated former IBF champion William Scull on May 3.

The Mexican great is now just months away from facing fellow pound-for-pound star Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford, with their mega-fight pencilled in to take place on Saturday September 13 in Las Vegas.

As he prepares for what is undeniably one of the toughest tests of his tenure, Canelo has spoken out and expressed an interest in a showdown with a retired five-division world champion who he has actually faced before.

Speaking to DAZN Boxing, Canelo admitted he would want a second encounter with Floyd Mayweather Jr, who become the first man to defeat him back in 2013.

“Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it’s not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn.”

Mayweather remained unbeaten throughout the duration of his career, defeating all 50 of the opponents he faced including Canelo, who he beat via majority decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas twelve years ago.

The 48-year-old from Michigan drew the curtain on his career back in 2017, just months after he got the better of MMA legend Conor McGregor in their monumental crossover showdown.
