Carl Froch‘s war of words with a former heavyweight champion continues to escalate.
The former super middleweight champion has always been a proud man and a fighter who could rely on his granite chin. On rare occasions when he was put down in the ring, he always rose again, no matter how heavy the shots.
He most famously did so against Jermaine Taylor. After hitting the canvas himself, he came back to score his own dramatic knockout victory in the dying seconds of the fight despite being down on the cards.
Years later when he took on young challenger George Groves, he was put down heavy in round one but managed to come back and secure his own knockout win in the mid-rounds, although at the time it was a hugely controversial stoppage which eventually led to a rematch he won more conclusively with a one-punch knockout.
Now speaking on his own Froch on Fighting, Froch has laid into Anthony Joshua‘s boxing legacy after recently revealing the two exchanged some heated WhatsApp messages.
“He says I’m not on his level but he’s talking about money. Fair play to him, he’s made a fortune. He’s smashed it. Let’s talk about levels in terms of career legacy and wins.
A little fat kid from Mexican made him quit on his feet for f**** sake. Spat his gumshield out and he’s looking around in the crowd for people to help him out. He got punched from pillar to post. OK, he got up two or three times, the referee is looking at him, do you want to carry on? And he’s quit on his feet.
That is embarrassing. Something ‘The Cobra’ would never ever do, and you can take that to the bank.”
Joshua was concussed and stopped by late replacement opponent Andy Ruiz Jr in New York back in 2019 – his first career loss and, although he would win a rematch conclusively, a moment many say ‘changed him’ as a fighter.
