Carl Froch has weighed in on the Chris Eubank Jr. Vs Conor Benn all-British banger.
The fight – three years in the making but longer considering their fathers’ rivalry in the nineties – was as intense, thrilling and dramatic as promised.
Over 12 rounds at the middleweight limit, both men traded ferociously, with Eubank landing the cleaner shots but Benn’s power and grit providing extreme pressure.
According to CompuBox, the 35-year-old from Brighton outlanded Benn in every round, connecting with a quite incredible 152 punches in the closing three. That doesn’t tell the entire story, with Benn’s aggression constantly pushing the action.
Speaking on Froch on Fighting, the Hall of Fame world champion praised both men before revealing this he scored the fight identically to all three judges at ringside.
“Chris Eubank Jr was the winner. He was the right winner. I thought he won by the same scorecard, 116-112, I had it exactly the same. Don’t get me wrong, it was a close fight, but the right man won and that’s all that matters.”
A rematch is contracted and many want to see it happen, however promoter Eddie Hearn – who called the scoring ‘disappointing’ – says that the team will consider what is best for his charge Benn, and that may be a move back down to his natural weight class.
Eubank Sr – who made a dramatic entrance on fight night after claiming he would not be in attendance – would not like his son to fight again at middleweight, believing the weight cut to be damaging to his health.
