Carl Froch Names His Top 3 British Fighters With One Big Name Missing

Nottingham’s Carl Froch, a legend of British boxing himself, has now named his top three fighting countrymen.

Froch is one of the best super middleweights the UK has produced. He was a four-time champion in the division and had famous nights against the likes of George Groves, including his final ever fight in front of 80, 000 people at Wembley Stadium which saw him score a knockout to retain his world title.

Speaking on his own Froch on Fighting channel, ‘The Cobra’ was asked for his top three British fighters of the last 25 years and conspicuously omitted the unbeaten Joe Calzaghe.

“My top three fighters, in order, Lennox Lewis, Naseem Hamed, and Ricky Hatton.”

He then broke down his top choice and explained it was Lewis’s toughness and ability to bounce back that he admired.

“You’ve got Benn and Eubank who I grew up with, Frank Bruno who I used to love watching, Barry McGuigan massive fan, top fighter.

“But when I think of my favourite fighters, I think of fighters I used to love watching, and Lennox Lewis was undisputed heavyweight champ, got knocked out a couple of times as well and came back ands avenged them losses. When he beat Mike Tyson, and some of the dust-ups he had … Naseem Hamed, he was an inspiration of mine … And Ricky Hatton. If you’re a boxing fan, you’re a Ricky Hatton fan.”

Most lists would include Calzaghe, who famously retired undefeated after 46 contests and as the longest reigning super middleweight world champion in boxing history.

Froch and Calzaghe have long had heated back-and-forths about why they never shared a ring together and who would have come out on top if they had. Robin Reid fought both men and recently claimed Froch would be able to ‘walk through’ the Welshman.
