It’s over a decade since Carl Froch last stepped inside a professional ring.
‘The Cobra’ enjoyed a sensational career, which first hit the pinnacle in 2008 when he defeated Jean Pascal to win the WBC super-middleweight title.
That began an incredible run of 12 straight world title fights, which saw him face the likes of Andre Ward, Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute and Jermain Taylor.
Froch then retired after back-to-back fights against George Groves, the first of which ended in a controversial ninth round stoppage win for the Nottingham man after recovering from a first round knockdown.
The two then had a memorable rematch at Wembley Stadium in May 2014, with Froch emphatically winning on this occasion thanks to an eighth round knockout victory.
‘The Cobra’ hung up his gloves after that, but one man he never fought that boxing fans would have loved to have seen him take on is fellow British great Joe Calzaghe.
Froch and Calzaghe were long-term bitter rivals, due mainly to Froch’s anger that the Welshman never stepped in the ring with him, through promoter Frank Warren has accused ‘The Cobra’ of being the one to avoid the fight.
Saudi chief and the man behind Riyadh Season, Turki Alalshikh, has now revealed on the Froch On Fighting YouTube channel that he tried to make the bout happen last year and is still keen on it.
“Last year I gave him [Joe Calzaghe] an offer to fight you. He accepted, then the next day he changed his mind. It was a good number, we tried to convince him, but not an exhibition, it was real. Still we want to see this.”
Froch expressed a keen interest in hearing the offer.
Calzaghe retired with a perfect 46-0 record, defeating fighters such as Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr, Chris Eubank and Kessler along the way.
‘The Cobra’ seemingly doesn’t agree with that unbeaten record though, naming the fight that he feels Calzaghe should have lost.
