Carl Froch Names The One World Champion Who Knocked Him Down In Sparring: “He Clipped Me”

Carl Froch is proud of his granite chin but has admitted that he was once put down in sparring.

Froch is one of the best super middleweights of his generation. He won several world titles over the course of his career and was involved in plenty of huge fights that were often high on drama.

Out in the States, he once reduced what was looking like a sure defeat when he stopped Jermain Taylor in the dying seconds of the 12th round. He also beat the likes of Jean Pascal, Mikkel Kessler in their rematch, and Lucien Bute, and across his whole career, he was rarely ever put down and wasn’t afraid to fight fire with fire.

George Groves managed it in their first fight but was later stopped by the referee under controversial circumstances, and was then cleaned out with one punch in the rematch, Froch’s final fight, back in 2014.

Speaking to Dave Allen on Froch on Fighting, ‘The Cobra’ admitted one Brit knocked him down in sparring.

“Tony Bellew clipped me. I was off balance, I went down. I got straight up, though. I was on one knee. He knocked me over, I was all right though – carried on the spar. Don’t get hurt do I?”

He was then asked if he still won the spar, and smiled before saying:

“Obviously, I’m a champ aren’t I? Listen, me and Bellew had some great spars.”

Froch recently teased a ring return, shared a picture of him lacing up the gloves with his old coach Rob McCracken. As for Bellew, he remains firmly in retirement after a championship winning career. He has also spoken of his spars with Froch, praising the grit of ‘The Cobra’ – proven by his willingness to get in with a much bigger man.
