Carl Froch has been mulling over Billy Joe Saunders‘ much-teased return to the boxing ring,
Saunders hasn’t fought since May 2021 when he stepped up to take on Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in a super-middleweight unification bout. He boxed well initially but was eventually caught up with, and the Mexican landed a savage uppercut that broke Saunders’ orbital bone and forced him to retire on his stool between rounds.
The Brit – also a former middleweight world champion who has beaten the likes of David Lemieux and Andy Lee – lost his IBF world title that night and hasn’t been seen in the ring since.
Earlier in his career, back in 2015, Saunders scored a narrow points win over Chris Eubank Jr and ever since the pair have gone back and forth about having a rematch. Eubank’s recent win over Conor Benn seems to have lit a fire under ‘BJS,’ who has ramped up his plans to return.
However, during a recent appearance on Sporting Talk, Froch, who never holds back with boxing opinions, cast doubts on whether Saunders will be able to make a successful return to the ring to fight Eubank, or at all, given the weight he now carries.
“Has he dropped weight? If he’s talking about fighting Chris Eubank Jr, f**k knows how he’s gonna make 160 … I don’t think Billy Joe has any intention of fighting. If he did, I don’t think he could make super-middleweight [again.] Have you seen the size of him?”
