Carl Froch Gives His Take On Conor Benn vs Ryan Garcia: “I Might Be Wrong”

Former world super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has had his say on a potential match-up between Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn.

Both Garcia and Benn have openly expressed an interest in facing each other in the near future ahead of the Brit’s return to the welterweight division.

‘The Destroyer’ produced a career-best victory over fierce rival Chris Eubank Jr back in November, defeating his countryman via unanimous decision at the conclusion of their rematch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As for Garcia, the 27-year-old from California is currently preparing to face reigning WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday February 21.

In a recent interview, Carl Froch played down Benn’s chances of securing a victory over Garcia as he admits that he believes the 29-year-old Brit is a ‘prospect’ in a surprising claim.

“He’s an exciting guy to watch, but he is a prospect. So you can’t chuck him in with Ryan Garcia. Ryan Garcia is a dangerous fighter. A big puncher. He’s had some close fights, some great wins. I don’t think putting Conor Benn in with Ryan Garcia, straightaway in his next fight, is a good idea.

“I might be wrong. Conor might get in there, be strong enough and big enough. Ryan probably doesn’t have the desire he used to have. He’s been beat himself, beat Devin Haney and then failed the drugs test. But, Garcia’s fast, big puncher and a world level operator. Conor Benn, for me, is a prospect. Never won a British or European title.”

Benn has already confirmed that he will be dropping back down a few divisions having spent his last two bout up at middleweight. ‘The Destroyer’ was recently confirmed as the mandatory challenger to the WBC welterweight title, meaning that he will likely be in line to face the winner of Garcia vs. Barrios next month.
