Carl Froch was welcomed into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2023 as one of the United Kingdom’s great competitors.
‘The Cobra’ had a multiple world title winning campaign at super-middleweight, co-starring in wars against the likes of Mikkel Kessler, Lucian Bute, Jermain Taylor and George Groves, who Froch knocked out in his final fight at Wembley Stadium.
The gritty Nottingham man only fell short twice in 35 fights, to Kessler before later winning a rematch and the other time to the elite Andre Ward, who would retire undefeated.
With his own impressive legacy cemented, Froch spoke to TalkSPORT about the greatest fighter of all time and had little doubt in his mind when naming Roy Jones Jr.
“My number one is somebody who was, for me, one of the greatest super middleweights of all time. Untouchable. Unhittable. He actually went up to heavyweight. The speed he had and the skillset was that good. You know who I’m gonna say. Roy Jones Jr.
“What other fighter would you say was untouchable, too fast for everybody and skillset where he could throw three, five, six or even seven left hooks? He was just the best at everything.”
Jones presented a dazzling blend of speed, athleticism, showmanship and power inside the ropes. As a pro, he captured titles at middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight, often displaying a level of dominance rarely seen in the sport. He even made a historic move up to the heavyweight division, winning the WBA title against John Ruiz in 2003 – a feat unmatched in over a century.
While the divisional jumps may have marred Jones in his later days as his reflexes and abilities dulled slightly, there are not many boxing fans on the planet who would argue against his case for one of the greatest of all time.
Since his elite level days, Jones has moved into training but is yet to find a standout star he can take to the top.
