With Tyson Fury coming off his second loss to Oleksandr Usyk, many in the sport feel that the only fight left for him is against countryman Anthony Joshua.
‘The Gypsy King’ couldn’t avenge his split decision defeat to Usyk, losing by unanimous decision in the rematch earlier this month. That was a similar fate to ‘AJ’, who also tried and failed twice to beat the elite Ukrainian.
Despite the all-British heavyweight clash being well past its best in terms of both form and stakes, there is little doubt that it will still be one of the biggest fights in boxing giving the standing of each man and what the have achieved up until this point. In fact, some may say that it being perhaps the final bout in the careers of Fury and Joshua is fitting.
That doesn’t include Carl Froch, who says he has little interest in the ‘battle of the losers’. Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former super-middleweight world champion said he would rather see each man retire.
“I hope Tyson Fury can cope with that loss, the back-to-back defeats, and walk away with his chin held high and smile. He’s had a great career, been a great champion and an unbelievable character for the sport of boxing.
I wouldn’t blame him if he jumped in with AJ because it’s a fight that will sell. It will fill Wembley. I don’t know if they’ll get 80,000 in there but it will get a big crowd at Wembley Stadium and be a sign-off payday.
But, to be honest, it’s not a big fight for me. It’s not something I get excited about. It’s almost like the battle of the losers. They’ve both loss to Usyk. AJ got finished off by Dubois, there’s a chance he might walk away. He’s gone quiet and vanished.”
Joshua was knocked out by Daniel Dubois in October and it is expected his team will now push for the Fury bout.
