Oleksandr Usyk is to rematch Daniel Dubois this summer, and Carl Froch has given his verdict on the contest.
There has long been controversy surrounding Usyk’s win over the Brit back in August 2023 after he was put down with what was ruled to be a low blow, though some people disagree. The Ukrainian recovered and went on to win via 9th round stoppage.
Since then, he has beaten Tyson Fury to become the undisputed champion but vacated the IBF belt to honour a rematch. Dubois picked up that belt by beating Fillip Hrgovic then defended it against Anthony Joshua in emphatic fashion.
Former super-middleweight world champion Froch has now weighed in on the matter. Speaking on Froch on Fighting, ‘The Cobra’ broke down the rematch.
“This is a good fight. Dubois had him down with that low blow stroke body shot. He hurt him, he put him over. If it was in the gonads, it was painful, it was a heavy shot, but the bottom line is Dubois showed he can punch hard and hurt Usyk, Usyk climbed off the floor and done him with a jab.
“A big stiff straight lead right hand, jab stroke power shot a couple of rounds later. Bottom line, Usyk got the job done like he always does. Dubois has grown since then, couple of good wins, battered AJ, he’s IBF champ. Usyk’s getting older, Dubois is what 26, 27 years old? It’s an interesting fight.”
‘DDD’ hasn’t fought since September when he beat Joshua, while Usyk, who has previously said Joshua is the better boxer of the two, last fought in December. They now return on July 19 for this undisputed showdown at Wembley Stadium.
