Carl Froch suggests that one star of the heavyweight division should leave the sport behind.
Froch’s own retirement is one of the best-timed in boxing. It came in a rematch with George Groves in front of a record crowd of 80, 000 people at Wembley Stadium back in 2014.
The first fight was a six months earlier and, after Froch was put down hard in the first round, ended with a controversial mid-round stoppage that saw ‘The Cobra’ get his hand raised despite Groves still looking to have plenty left.
The rematch ended much more conclusively, with Froch landing the best right hand of his career to leave Groves out cold on the canvas.
The former super-middleweight world champion now thinks the time has come for Deontay Wilder to walk away. The once feared knockout artists and WBC ruler has lost four of his last five fights – two to Tyson Fury by KO, one on points to Joseph Parker, and one by stoppage to Zhilei Zhang last time out in June 2024.
Speaking on his own podcast, Froch broke down why he thinks Wilder should retire.
“I feel that Deontay Wilder should seriously consider retiring. But his trainer Malik Scott has released a statement and said he will be back, that he has a bright future in boxing – I really question that, especially at the high level I definitely question that.
“He’s shown his punch resistance is not what it was but his punching power now seems to be diminishing. That was his big asset, that knockout punch. As for the biggest fight, it could be Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou, they are still mega fights. I feel this is just money-motivated.
“The only reason Deontay Wilder is being told to get back in the ring is [money]. Deontay Wilder could end up getting seriously hurt. This guy needs to bow out and look after himself and think about his health and his future. He’s had a fantastic career and made good money but now it’s like he’s being lured in by Saudi.”
Despite Froch and others feeling this way, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ returns on June 30 against Tyrrell Herndon. Should he secure the win as expected, his team may target a long-awaited clash with Anthony Joshua.
