Jaron Ennis has been sent a huge warning by a fellow world champion.
Ennis is the reigning IBF welterweight title holder, having held the strap since being elevated from interim champion in November 2023 due to Terence Crawford being stripped of the belt.
He has made two defences since then, the first coming last July when he stopped David Avanesyan after five rounds, before then claiming a unanimous decision victory in a rematch with Karen Chukhadzhian in November.
It has given ‘Boots’ an unbeaten record of 33-0 with one no contest, but his next opponent is confident that he’ll be the first man to defeat Ennis.
Eimantas Stanionis is the reigning WBA welterweight champion, who like Ennis benefited from Crawford’s previous reign at 147lbs after being elevated from ‘Regular’ champion when ‘Bud’ vacated his remaining titles to move up to super-welterweight.
Stanionis and Ennis are set to meet in a unification battle at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on April 12, with the winner walking away as the IBF and WBA champion.
Ahead of the fight, Stanionis spoke to Mill City Boxing, and had a defiant response when he was asked about ‘Boots’ claiming the Lithuanian does nothing but move forward.
“I think he’s right. I’m going forward and straight forward. Like a truck going forward, all gas no break. April 12 we will see.”
Ennis will be hoping to prove Stanionis wrong in the fight, as victory for ‘Boots’ could set up a clash later in the year with current WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez, after the two men have been linked to a fight with one another in recent weeks.
