Lennox Lewis, George Foreman and Vitali Klitschko are some of boxing’s greatest ever heavyweights, and now one of their former rivals is set to make a comeback.
Lewis is a three-time world heavyweight champion and also became undisputed in the division, the last man to do so until Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury back in May.
Foreman’s list of accolades is just as impressive, having shared the ring with the likes of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, and also becoming the oldest world heavyweight champion in history.
Klitschko also had a career to remember, defeating 15 opponents in world title fights, and alongside his brother Wladimir, they ruled the heavyweight division, dominating throughout the 2000s and early 2010s.
One man they all fought in their respective careers is Shannon Briggs, and he has announced his intention to stage a comeback.
Briggs burst onto the scene in the late 1990s when he defeated Foreman by majority decision, in what proved to be the final professional fight for ‘Big George.’
That victory led to Briggs challenging Lewis for his world title, but it ended in Lewis claiming a fifth round stoppage victory. Briggs would go on to win the WBO heavyweight title in 2006 against Siarhei Liakhovich, but lost it in his first defence to Sultan Ibragimov.
Briggs challenged for a world title once more against Klitschko in October 2010, but it ended in a losing effort. Although his last fight was nearly a decade ago in 2016, he told Bloody Elbow he plans to return, and named who he is targeting.
“100% [I’m coming back]. I’ll fight Mike Tyson, Jake Paul, anybody.”
Mike Tyson and Jake Paul are set to do battle in November, and Briggs is pleased to see the bout happening.
“Great fight. It’s great for Mike that at his age he can still make money. It’s amazing.”
Briggs will be a keen observer when Tyson and Paul meet, and some recent sparring footage shows that ‘Iron Mike’ may still have it.
