Gervonta Davis is arguably the hottest property in boxing right now but has been accused by a rival of not taking any risks with his fight selection.
Davis’ star power was at an all time high coming off the back of a career best win against Ryan Garcia last April – a victory which has aged well after Garcia’s performance against former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney.
The explosive American has been out of the ring since due to personal problems but returns to action against Frank Martin next month.
One man long linked to a clash against ‘Tank’ is fellow countryman and three-weight world champion, Shakur Stevenson.
Speaking to Say Cheese TV, Stevenson criticised Davis for the Martin fight and accused the WBA champion of ‘taking the least risk’ possible when picking opponents.
“That’s why he’s fighting Frank Martin [because he washes him].
He’s picking and choosing, that’s what he does. Tank takes the least risk.
If Tank was really a risky fighter or this person he claims to be he would have fought Edwin De Los Santos. Why not fight the guy that actually fought me instead of the guy who pulled out from fighting me.”
The lightweight and super-lightweight divisions are littered with big names, including Vasily Lomachenko, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez, with fans hoping the matchmaking can match the talent in 2025.
Davis faces Martin on June 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, whilst Stevenson is back in action on July 6 against Artem Harutyunyan at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.
