Terence Crawford has made it clear that his main motivation left in the sport is to face off against unified super-middleweight champion, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Since then he’s been linked to fights against Vergil Ortiz and Sebastian Fundora, but former Canelo promoter Eddie Hearn told ESNEWS that we might not see ‘Bud’ back in the ring unless he can land a fight against the Mexican superstar.
“It doesn’t look like [he will get the Canelo fight] at the moment. I don’t think Crawford will fight again outside of Canelo Alvarez. I don’t think he has the desire. He definitely won’t fight Vergil Ortiz in my opinion, I don’t think he’ll fight Fundora. He made a lot of money last time out, he made a lot of money against Spence and I think he’s thinking if I don’t make a lot of money I’m done.”
Although Canelo initially dismissed the fight, claiming he would get no credit for beating the naturally smaller man, he has more recently said he will discuss the match-up after his next fight against Edgar Berlanga.
If the two are to meet in the ring, although Crawford will be having to move up a further two weight classes, former super-middleweight champion James Toney told ESNEWS that the 36-year-old American would become the first man to stop Canelo.
“Yep. Crawford beats Canelo, by KO”.
The Hall of Fame inductee has never been Canelo’s biggest fan, once claiming he’s not even fit to ‘carry his gym shoes’.
“Canelo, he fights one way. Everybody thinks he’s a diamond. He’s not. He’s garbage. Canelo couldn’t even carry my gym shoes. I would knock him out.”
Canelo returns on September 14 against Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
