Unified World Champion Says He Wants To Move Up To Heavyweight Before Retiring

A reigning unified world champion is targeting a move up to heavyweight before he calls time on his professional career.

Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez has found himself on an impressive run of form since making the jump up to cruiserweight from 175lbs after he was beaten by Dmitry Bivol back in November of 2022.

The 34-year-old Mexican is the current unified WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion, making the first defence of his crown last June when he defeated Yuniel Dorticos via unanimous decision at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

‘Zurdo’ is reportedly in line to return to action against WBC light-heavyweight champion David Benavidez next, with reports suggesting that the duo will lock horns over the Mexican Labour Day weekend in May.

Speaking to Fight Hub recently, Ramirez revealed that he expects to ‘eventually’ make the move up to heavyweight as he claims he will have ‘two or three’ fights there before his professional career comes to an end.

“Eventually I want to move up too, yeah. Heavyweight, why not? I don’t know yet but probably I want to do like maybe two [or] three fights at heavyweight and then retire.”

Before ‘Zurdo’ can seriously consider making the move up to heavyweight, the 34-year-old must remain focused on his impending clash with the hard-hitting Benavidez, who has established himself as one of the best active fighters on the planet over the last couple of years.

‘The Mexican Monster’ was last in action in November when he defeated Anthony Yarde, and now hopes to extend his unbeaten record against Ramirez.
