Gervonta Davis is slated for a December return to the ring following an impressive first WBA Lightweight World Title defence against Frank Martin back in June.

The big puncher from Baltimore is undefeated in 30 with only two opponents managing to make it the distance. There’s no surprise then that he’s a box office star, but fans are looking for him to face high-level opposition on a more consistent basis.

Davis’ team tried to make that happen by entering talks with IBF Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko immediately after the Martin victory, but the Ukrainian pulled out due to a lack of motivation to fight again this year.

Speculation surrounding a fight with WBC Champ Shakur Stevenson came to nothing and the frontrunner was Isaac Cruz – one of the men who managed to go the full twelve rounds with ‘Tank.’

‘Pitbull’ Cruz lost his chance at the rematch as well as his his super-lightweight belt when he was defeated by Jose Valenzuela. ‘El Rayo’ – the rangey southpaw trained by Robert Garcia – then entered the frame.

Garcia recently confirmed that there was an offer for the fight but has revealed it was turned down because it was at 135 pounds rather than 140. He also said the timing was an issue.

“I didnt say I didn’t let him. I said he wasn’t fighting this year. He was in a tough 5 month camp. Originally fighting on Tank’s card in June and then got moved to August. I don’t know where everyone got the idea or news he was fighting Tank 2 1/2 months after but that was never true.”

“The offer was for 135. Rayo is champ at 140.”

Dan Rafael reports that ‘Tank’ could instead face former super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach in Washington on December 21.

Should Davis come through that as expected, and Stevenson returns to the ring successfully early next year, fans will once again call for the unification fight between two of America’s most exciting talents.
