Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has predicted the outcome of former opponent Canelo Alvarez‘s showdown with Terence Crawford.
Canelo will defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship against Crawford on Saturday, September 13, although an official venue for the mega-fight is yet to be announced.
‘Bud’ Crawford is bidding to defy the odds and become a three-division undisputed champion when he faces the Mexican great, although he is faced with having to move up two weight classes having spent the majority of his career fighting at the welterweight limit.
One fighter who has given an insight into Canelo’s chances of defeating ‘Bud’ is former rival Chavez Jr, who was defeated by his countryman when they fought back in 2017.
Speaking to Fight Hype, Chavez was asked to sum up Alvarez’s recent performance against William Scull, who he defeated to become the undisputed champion at 168lbs for a second time.
“I always think that Canelo has a good performance but the last one, not good. Don’t look good, his opponent and him don’t make a entertaining fight.”
He was then asked to predict who he believes will come out on top in September, having witnessed the greatness of Alvarez first hand.
“I think Canelo is the favourite of this fight, it’s still a big [task] beating Crawford, and I don’t know how Crawford is now. His last performance don’t look good so I pick Canelo.”
Canelo became the first two-time undisputed super-middleweight champion within the ‘four belt era’ when he defeated former IBF champion William Scull via unanimous decision on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The 34-year-old has received criticism for his performance against the previously unbeaten Cuban, although his prior dominance at 168lbs holds him in good stead to potentially become the first fighter to defeat ‘Bud’ in September.
