Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez has shared his thoughts on the upcoming mega-fight between countryman Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez and Terence Crawford.

It was confirmed earlier this month that the pound-for-pound stars will lock horns in September, with Canelo set to defend his unified WBC, WBA and WBO super middleweight titles against the 37-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska.

The stakes could be raised even higher ahead of the highly anticipated showdown, as the 34-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico is set to face IBF super middleweight champion William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh in a bid to become a two-time undisputed champion at 168lbs. Canelo was stripped of the IBF crown last year after he opted against facing Scull in favour of a bout against Edgar Berlanga Jr, which he won via unanimous decision last September.

Should Canelo come through Scull as expected, he will face Crawford four months later in Las Vegas.

Speaking to ESNEWS, Chavez made no mistake in favouring his countryman to get the job done against ‘Bud’ when they clash.

“Canelo will knock him out in six or seven rounds.

Crawford is good fighter but there’s weight classes.”

Crawford is set to make the significant jump up to 168lbs in what is undoubtedly the biggest challenge of his glittering career.

The 37-year-old has already captured world titles in four weight divisions, with his most recent triumph coming against Israil Madrimov last August. ‘Bud’ dethroned Madrimov of the WBA super-welterweight title.

Canelo’s dominance in the super middleweight division was cemented back in 2021 when he beat Caleb Plant to become the first undisputed champion of the ‘four belt era’.

Since then, the 34-year-old has picked up wins against the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Jermell Charlo and Jaime Munguia, remaining unbeaten since suffering the second defeat of his career against Dmitry Bivol in 2022.
