Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez Sr has named the most skilled opponent that he faced during his glittering professional career.
Chavez is widely considered to be one of the greatest fighters of all time, winning world titles across several weight classes between 1980 and 2005.
The Mexican great became a dominant force during the 1990s, remaining unbeaten in his first 87 professional bouts up until he suffered the first defeat of his career to Frankie Randall in January of 1994.
He produced a number of legacy-defining victories at the height of his career, defeating the likes of Greg Haugen, Meldrick Taylor and Hector Camacho to name just a few.
His career eventually came to an end in 2005, shortly after he suffered a shock defeat to Grover Wiley in the 115th and final bout of his tenure.
In a feature with The Ring Magazine, Chavez spoke fondly of former rival Meldrick Taylor as he claims the two-weight world champion was the most skilled opponent he crossed paths with during his career.
“Meldrick Taylor: He had every skill you need as a fighter, his speed, quickness, power, all you could ask for.”
Chavez got the better of Taylor in their first encounter back in March 1990, stopping the American in the 12th and final round to unify the WBC and IBF light-welterweight titles in Las Vegas.
Their paths crossed for the second time four years later and it was Chavez who got the job done once again, stopping Taylor in the 8th round of their rematch to retain his WBC light-welterweight title for the first time.
