Mexican fighting legend Julio Cesar Chavez has weighed in on Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez versus Terence Crawford.
The mega-fight between the two pound-for-pound stars has been announced for September – though certain details continue to evolve – and will see Crawford move up two divisions from his last outing for the challenge.
Canelo, the reigning undisputed super-middleweight world champion, is coming off the back of an underwhelming fight against Cuba’s William Scull, putting in a performance that has led some in the sport to change their predictions for the fight.
Many believe that Scull’s elusive movement, albeit making for dull viewing, exposed a decline in 34-year-old Canelo’s ability to cut the ring and hunt down his opponents. Crawford – who has proven to fight well at any pace and range – may have seen a blueprint for victory.
One man who has been steadfast in his verdict, however, is Chavez, who told ES News that his countryman will hand the switch-hitting American not only his first defeat, but a knockout.
“Canelo will knock him out in six or seven rounds. Crawford is a good fighter but there’s weight classes [for a reason].”
More recently, Chavez told Seconds Out that he still does not understand the match-up due to the difference in weight.
Opinions like the above are driving Crawford to once again make history. He will enter the ring in September after over a year out, dismissing the idea of a warm-up bout in the interim in order to focus on building weight and crafting a plan to become just the third man to defeat Alvarez in 67 fights.
