Julio Cesar Chavez Sr has endured many ups and down when watching his son’s boxing career, and another big moment comes next month against Jake Paul.
Chavez Jr takes on Paul at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on June 28, with the Mexican looking to return to some of his past glory.
The 39-year-old is a former WBC middleweight champion, but after losing his belt in 2012, he has failed to ever return to those heights, losing bouts he was expected to win and missing weight in others, leading to accusations of not training or taking the sport seriously.
The same could never be said about Chavez Sr, who is widely regarded as one of Mexico’s best ever fighters, winning an incredible 107 fights during his career, 86 of those wins by knockout.
Chavez Sr will be in attendance when his son meets Paul, the Youtuber-turned-boxer who was last in action in November when he defeated boxing legend Mike Tyson in a controversial bout, due to 58-year-old ‘Iron Mike’ not having competed in nearly two decades.
Paul is a big betting favourite heading into next month’s fight, but Chavez Sr told ESPN Knockout he believes his son will get the win after watching him train on multiple occasions.
“Honestly, this fight is a blessing from God.
Once you’re in the ring, everyone’s got a chance. Every fighter with gloves on has a shot. Jake Paul is a young fighter, he’s very motivated, he trains well, and it’s clear he hits hard—but he doesn’t have the quality, you know, as a boxer to beat my son.
I’ve gone to see Julio train twice, and I’ve been truly impressed. Never in his life have I seen him train as hard as he is for this fight. And if he keeps going like this, I told him there’s no doubt in my mind he’s going to beat Jake Paul.”
Paul has had just 12 fights in his professional career so far, but a reigning world champion has offered ‘The Problem Child’ a shock shot at a legitimate world title.
