Derek Chisora is waiting around to make sure he picks the perfect opponent for his 50th contest.

‘Del Boy’ has long said he will bow out once he has reached 50 contests, and he has been on 49 for some time. His last three have been good results with wins over Gerald Washington, Otto Wallin and Joe Joyce, all showing he still has what it takes despite now being over 40 and a veteran of so many hard fights.

Two of them have been with Dillian Whyte, who beat him on points and then knocked him out, and has long been mooted as a possible final opponent.

However, speaking to IBA Pro Boxing after his victory over Kubrat Pulev – who Chisora has also fought twice – this past weekend, Murat Gassiev revealed that Chisora was there to see the contest and approached him afterwards to propose a match-up.

“He came after the fight. I didn’t understand what he said exactly, but I think what he wants is a fight. He said ‘maybe in Moscow’. I said, ‘Moscow is good. But let’s try England. Maybe Wembley [Stadium]…’

“I’m not a big star for Wembley, but maybe some small stadium or some undercard. We would give a good fight, I think. Derek is a good guy. I respect him a lot.”

The win saw Gassiev, a former cruiserweight, become the new WBA Regular heavyweight champion, so it could be an opportunity for Chisora to pick up a title before the end of his career, though Whyte has continued to say he is keen to be the Londoner’s final opponent after talks initially broke down back in October.
