Oleksandr Usyk broke Daniel Dubois down on his way to a spectacular fifth round knockout. Derek Chisora has weighed in on the Brit’s performance.
The Ukrainian became undisputed heavyweight world champion for a second time this weekend at Wembley Stadium, putting in an elite performance against a man he had stopped inside nine round back in 2023.
It was over quicker this time around, with Dubois struggling to find a home for his big shots, dazzled by feints and counters. When he pushed the pace in the fifth, Usyk scored two knockdowns to end it with the 15th KO of his campaign.
Post-fight speaking to Second Out, Chisora – who most feel gave Usyk his toughest heavyweight test back in 2020 – said of his countryman: ‘he quit,’ something he was accused of in Poland during their first fight.
“He quit. He quit again … Yeah, man, he quit. I don’t understand. They were supposed to train different. They did not. It was set for him to win it.”
Rather than saying Dubois could have risen from the heavy shot that ended the contest, Chisora believes Dubois’ heart was broken before the first bell.
“I tell you when he quit. He quit when he walked in the ring, because he did not use his double jab. He did not hunt the way he was hunting AJ. We came to see him go nuts. He didn’t go nuts, he was holding back. Everybody was there for Daniel, do you understand? It was his to win.”
Asked how he rebuilds, it was then Chisora offered positive words, saying the 27-year-old will reach the top again but was not certain against who.
“He will be a two-time world champion, don’t worry about that. He will win a world title again. Can he beat Parker? No. Can he beat Bakole? We don’t know.”
Dubois has proven he can build back from defeat before. As for Usyk, 38, he says rest is the priority now, but is expected to have one more bout before retirement.
