Derek Chisora has been brutally honest with his assessment of how one of his fellow heavyweight veterans performed in his last fight.
Chisora is a popular figure in British boxing who has always left everything on the line in every contest he has had. There have now been 50 of them all in, with 36 of them being wins and 14 losses.
Last time out, he took on the once fearsome American puncher and former WBC ruler Deontay Wilder but was beaten on points across the 12 rounds after three consecutive wins against Otto Wallin, Gerald Washington and Joe Joyce.
Joyce was in action recently for the first time since his point loss to Filip Hrgovic in April 2025, which was more than a year after the defeat to Chisora.
It was effectively one last attempt at getting back into the heavyweight picture, but it ended in disaster with an 11th-round stoppage to Artem Suslenkov, the Brit seemingly losing all motivation during the round and signalling for the fight to stop.
Speaking to Seconds Out following the end of the fight, ‘Del Boy’ didn’t hold back with his views on how Joyce performed.
“He just quit, that was it. He thought he had it in him when he was training, and then he said he was not fit. I’m like, ‘You were training, though?’ You know when the fire goes out, when boxing retires you? This is what we talk about. Suddenly, you don’t have enough to stop these younger men. Boxing retired him tonight.”
Despite long claiming he would retire after his 50th fight, Chisora was ringside in Russia recently to see WBA heavyweight champion Murat Gassiev defend his title, and now the pair have been linked with a possible fight. For Joyce, meanwhile, this is surely the end.
