Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn’s fight is just a matter of weeks away.
The first bell for this generational clash has been coming for a long time. It was first due in October 2022 but Benn tested positive for a banned substance late in the day. At the time, there were concerns over the amount of weight Eubank Jr had to lose to boil down to meet Benn, and his own father Eubank Sr was convinced it should not have been happening.
When it was canned, Eubank moved on to a fight with Liam Smith, a former world middleweight champion who handed Eubank his first knockdown and beat him by KO. Eubank avenged the defeat six months later with a stoppage win of his own, and in October last year got another victory inside the distance.
All the while Benn was fighting to clear his name and was finally free to fight from the end of last year. The build-up has been controversial with Eubanks smashing an egg in Benn’s face and taking a fine as a result.
Speaking to The Airel Helwani Show, Eubank was asked if his father would be ringside on April 26.
“I’m not confident of anything but I will try my best to get him there or facilitate him being there.”
He was then asked what his father said to him the last time they spoke a few weeks ago with Sr reaffirming his view that the Benn contest will not go ahead.
“He said ‘the fight isn’t going to happen’.
It sounds crazy, but at the same time he said the same before the last fight so I can’t even call it crazy now because it did happen the first time, but it’s not going to happen this time, it’s virtually impossible.”
The fight takes place at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has got people divided on the outcome.
