Chris Eubank Jr. has shared his thoughts on the upcoming Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois rematch.
WBC, WBA and WBO champion Usyk and IBF champion Dubois meet at Wembley Stadium on July 19, where a new undisputed heavyweight champion will be crowned.
It’s a rematch of their battle from back in August 2023, which Usyk won by ninth round stoppage, after a controversial moment earlier in the fight where Dubois thought he had dropped the Ukrainian with a body shot, only for it to be ruled as a low blow.
This summer’s rematch between the two heavyweights is the latest big stadium fight to take place in the UK, following Eubank Jr’s victory over Conor Benn at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London last month.
Eubank Jr has now told Talksport how he sees the Usyk vs. Dubois rematch to go, and explained why he is hoping the Brit gets the win.
“I saw something about Usyk saying that he thought Conor Benn won the fight. I don’t know if this is true, I can’t imagine that he watched that fight and thought that Conor Benn won. I landed twice as many punches, but people are telling me it’s true.
“If that’s the truth, then I’m rooting for Dubois because that’s crazy. That’s really crazy to me. I’ve met Usyk a bunch of times and we’ve always been cool so I was shocked to see that.
“Daniel Dubois is on a roll. He’s coming off of a massive win against AJ. Usyk is also on a massive roll, I think that fight will come down to mindset. In the last fight they both showed mental weakness.
“Usyk took a three minute break in that fight for a shot that some people say was low, some people say it wasn’t, but he still took that break. Dubois crumbled under the pressure after that. I think it will come down to who’s mentally more prepared to tough this fight out. I’m interested to see what happens.”
It is indeed true that Usyk thought Benn won the clash against Eubank Jr, and he wasn’t the only big name to claim that they thought the result should have gone the other way after Oscar De La Hoya also agreed.
