Chris Eubank Sr once weighed in on the debate around a fight that never happened between Joe Calzaghe and Carl Froch.
These super middleweights are some of the most successful the UK has ever produced. Although the careers of Calzaghe and Froch overlapped somewhat, they never fought, with Calzaghe moving up to light heavyweight for his final few fights and beating the likes of Jeff Lacy and Roy Jones Jr. to remain undefeated across his 46-fight career.
Before that, he unified the super-middleweight division with wins over the likes of Bernard Hopkins and Mikkel Kessler, though Froch has always maintained he should have lost at least one fight to Robin Reid.
Froch also beat Kessler, as well as Jean Pascal, Lucien Bute and, most famously, George Groves – once controversially, and once much more conclusively with a one-punch knockout in his final fight in May 2014 at Wembley Stadium in front of 80, 000 people.
When asked about the fantasy fight, Eubank Sr – who himself lost a unanimous points decision to Calzaghe – expressed his views that Froch would have little chance against the Welshman.
“Calzaghe would’ve won every round against Carl Froch because it’s just basic math; it’s 4 to 1. It’s a simple matter of speed. And Carl won’t mind me saying that because Carl is a gentleman.”
Eubank Sr is not alone in the prediction, with many believing that Calzaghe’s slick skills, high punch output and solid footwork would have seen him take the win, although ‘The Cobra’s granite chin and famous work rate could have made it an epic contest.
