Chris Eubank Sr Has No Doubt Who Wins Prime Roy Jones vs Joe Calzaghe: “You Can’t Beat Him”

Roy Jones Jr and Joe Calzaghe met back in November 2008.

It was in the latter stages of both of their careers up at light-heavyweight when each fighter was out of their prime, with Calzaghe recovering from a knockdown to claim a unanimous decision victory.

The debate has often raged on over who would have won if the two fighters had met when they were both at the peak of their powers.

Chris Eubank Sr, who also lost on the scorecards to Calzaghe at the end of his career, has discussed the potential match-up when he was a panellist on The Gloves Are Off, with Jones Jr and Calzaghe among those that were present.

He reflected on wanting to face Jones Jr during his own career, but felt it would have been suicide for both himself and Calzaghe.

“I had an ego to fight James Toney and to fight Roy Jones, but this was a kind of suicide. When we [Eubank and Jones] met when Naseem was fighting in April 2001, I said to you did you actually think the only person that would give you trouble is Chris Eubank?

“You said yeah. I said you know what, if the fight would have ever happened we would have both been hurt, as we’d have had to go to war to win. You can’t beat guys like this. In his time, in all respect to Joe [Calzaghe], in his time it’s suicide.”

After his professional career ended, Jones Jr went on to train Chris Eubank Jr, and the boxing legend has offered his thoughts on Eubank Jr taking on Conor Benn.
